February is American Heart Month – a time for the nation to cooperatively focus on heart health and lifestyle choices that help prevent heart disease. We invite you to join us as we Leap into Heart Health and remember the life and legacy of Dr. Thomas Wharton and the immense impact he had on the field of cardiology.

Send us a message to share your heart health story or to let us know why your heart health provider is so special – and consider making a gift to the Thomas P. Wharton, MD Fund for Cardiology in their honor and help support the prevention of heart disease along with the
continued provision of advanced interventional cardiac services within the local
community. Our heart health providers will be truly grateful to hear from you and to know they are making a difference in the lives of their patients. Thank you!

About Thomas P. Wharton, Jr., MD

16-5-WHARTON-Exeter-Crop.bmp

Thomas P. Wharton, Jr., MD was a pioneer in the treatment of myocardial infarction, commonly known as a heart attack, with emergency balloon angioplasty and stenting. Exeter Hospital’s cardiovascular team has been recognized nationally for its work with the entire “chain of survival” to respond quickly, from paramedics in
the field all the way to the cath lab for acute coronary angioplasty. This outstanding door-to-balloon time is much lower than the national average, which is a defining factor in saving
lives.

Dr. Wharton passed away in 2017, but his legacy lives on in Exeter Hospital’s Thomas P. Wharton Jr. Cardiovascular Suite and in The Wharton Fund, which supports his commitment to preventing heart disease and to offering advanced interventional cardiac services to our local community.

Notes of Gratitude

“Dr. Sutherland knelt on the floor in front of where I was sitting so she could look me in the eye. Dr. Sutherland showed so much compassion and care for me, not just for Win. Everyone at Exeter Hospital did."
- Pam, wife of cardiac patient Win

"
When my son was in the hospital, Dr. Gireesh called or texted me 4-5 times a day to see how we were. He made sure I was hanging in there and very supportive. I can never thank him enough for being so amazing."
- Lisa, mother of cardiac patient

"Thanks to Dr. Goodkin for really listening.  Over the past eight months I have had a variety of problems - blockage in graft requiring angioplasty at CMC, congestive heart failure giving me problems, A-fib, pacemaker put in.  His communication with my PCP and other cardiologists, and taking time to explain options is much appreciated.  Also, Sue's help getting appointments at CMC was deeply appreciated.  Cardiology gets a big thumbs up!"
- Gayle, patient
